Bernhard Kellner is a cardiologist with qualifications in internal medicine and sports medicine who joined the CHL Sports Medicine department in July 2025. With a special interest in exercise physiology, he possesses extensive clinical experience in cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), particularly in the diagnostic evaluation of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. His work focuses on integrating exercise diagnostics into clinical practice to better understand exercise intolerance and guide individualised treatment and training strategies.
Eric Besenius is a sports scientist and is working since 2019 at the sports clinic of CHL as well as at LIHPS, where he specialises in performance diagnostics and evidence-based monitoring to optimise the development of athletes. Drawing on his background from his studies in sports science and his former research work in sports medicine at the Luxembourg Institute of Health, his work focuses on the physiological assessment of performance parameters to bridge the gap between scientific research and applied athletic training.
The lecture will focus on how spiroergometry enhances the diagnostic toolkit by providing detailed insights into cardiopulmonary efficiency and ventilatory thresholds. It will concentrate on the practical application of gas exchange analysis in identifying medical pathologies and calculating energy economy, offering a valuable cross-reference to lactate-based diagnostics. Through targeted case studies, the session will guide participants on using spiroergometric data to refine medical evaluations and better understand the physiological limitations of the individual.
The lecture will be organised by the Société Luxembourgeoise de Médecine du Sport (SLMS). It will be given in English and is open to the general public. The presentation will last approximately 45 minutes, followed by a Q&A session. We hope to see you there!
Attendance at the presentation is free and registration is not required.
